California Has Too Many Laws: We Look at the Recently Passed Laws
If you want to stay in a state with too much regulation, then you might want to consider California. For a long time, it has been known to pass many laws each year tackling various aspects of the Californians. Some residents might agree to the new regulations, while others might oppose them. In 2018 alone, California passed over 1,000 laws. The governor, Jerry Brown does not seem to be slowing down with the legislations either.
One of the laws that stand out are those that touch on net neutrality. For a long time, California has been looking to establish its own rules on net neutrality. However, when the law was passed, the U.S. Department of Justice was quick to file a lawsuit to block the law from being implemented.
Another law that is likely to face opposition is the one on gender equality. You might think by now corporations can ensure there is a better gender balance in their organization, but that is not the case. The Bill outlines that the corporations in the state should include women on their board of directors. We can be sure that some organizations might be quick to sue the state over the same.
California is also looking into whether it should add more regulations to the gun control laws. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of mass shootings. Maybe that is what California needs right now. With the majority of the elected members being democrats, it is expected that such laws would easily pass.
So, some of the key factors that the laws propose is that a gun owner should be at least 21 years old to own a rifle or shotgun. The law also sets the same age restriction for those who might want to own a handgun. If a person is convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, then they will be banned for a lifetime from owning any weapons. Those with mental health problems can also not own a gun.
Gov. Brown made is easier for employers and other workers to obtain gun restraining orders against someone. This is important for those who might not feel safe around some people who own guns.
The best part about gun control in California is that more polls show there is a massive support for gun control. It might take some time before there is complete control over the guns, but it is a nice step towards the right direction.
The #MeToo movement also sparked several laws to be drafted to protect the workers in a work environment. However, this law is facing much opposition from business groups. Well, several other laws that came up because of the #MeToo movement are finally laws. It just goes on to show that the power of social media can no longer be ignored.
As much as the state is coming up with new laws each year, the question is whether they can implement these laws adequately. There has to be will-power from the courts and citizens alike to enforce these laws. As much as it might seem like a crazy amount of laws in just one year, we must admit that most make sense.
